Subject : Your Garden Page
Hi:
I'm looking forward to following your gardening project.
Please don't forget to add, at some future date, your photos and instructions for growing the squash on the fence. I found that quite impressive and want to show it to my daughter-in-law in case she'd like to try it next (Alberta) summer.
Jean Gardner
-----------------
Thanks for writing Jean!
We were down for 5 days moving to our new home so did not see your note until today.
The squash grown on our fence last year was not only fun, but tasty!
We'll probably try it again next year, now that we have settled into our new abode with an 86' fence in the back, all in full sun.
In the next couple of days I'll add a post on how we did it.
Also, a friend, SueLP in Longueuil, Quebec was going to try it. I'll find out if she did and if so, how they're making out.
Best from the Niagara,
Yours in gardening ~
mike
Our "20 Year Project". We're looking forward to building our brand new garden, year by year, from almost scratch. Apart from a few very small trees, our newly acquired tract is currently only a bare stretch of grass. So starting July 23rd, 2007 when we take possession it's "on with the show" ..... and please come back often and watch us grow!

Planning Our Garden's Backdrop ~ Two Sunburst Honeylocust Trees Acting as Twin Sentinels Over Our Yard
Sunburst Honeylocusts: regal and majestic!
They offer such a wonderful contrast to all
other garden and tree surroundings.
They offer such a wonderful contrast to all
other garden and tree surroundings.
Botanical Name: Gleditsia triacanthos 'Sunburst'
General: This a very popular tree noted for the new foliage, which emerges with a bright gold hue before fading to green. Honey locusts are striking trees, mainly from North America, often planted for contrast against darker green backgrounds, which highlight the golden foliage in autumn. The species is an open airy tree, particularly attractive in late summer when decked out with its flat, slightly twisted seedpods, but it is a tree to approach with respect because of the long spines which arm its branches. 'Sunburst' is a thornless fast-growing variety, with fern-like bright yellowish-green leaves which stand out clearly against the darker older foliage. Also known as 'Aurea'. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Height: 35-40'
Spread: 30'
Shape: Open, irregular habit with non-symmetrical branching
Sun: Full to Part
Growth Rate: Fast
Fall Color: Yellow

Thought for Today
As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will.
You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken.
You'll fight with your best friend.
You'll blame a new love for things an old one did.
You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love.
So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back. Don't be afraid that your life will end, be afraid that it will never begin.

This Year's Sweet Million Cherry Tomato Crop ~ All Containerized
Knowing we were going to move, we planted all of our cherry tomato plants ~ all Sweet Million ~ in large containers.
This has not inhibited their growth, (we've kept up with twice daily waterings and regular fertilizing), but we've allowed them to go short and bushy by pinching, rather than tall like last year's fourteen foot "bean stalks". No way could we move anything taller than 5 or 6 feet. They weigh a ton. Thank goodness Michael will be on hand to help with the move!
